Exmoor Gate Lodges
  Welcome to Whipcott Water Cottages

Whipcott Water Cottages have a good central location in the heart of England’s West Country, within easy reach of the seaside, and surrounded by the beautiful countryside of Devon, Somerset, and Dorset.

Come and stay in one of our comfortable cottages and we will do our best to make sure you have an enjoyable holiday.

These comfortable self catering Somerset holiday cottages are in a peaceful waterside setting next to the Grand Western Canal, which runs from Tiverton in Devon, to Holcombe Rogus, a small village near Wellington in Somerset. Our holiday cottages (all with their own private hot tub!) on the Somerset and Devon borders are just 5 minutes away from junction 27 on the M5, making them easily accessible from all parts of the UK. The self catering cottages are an excellent base for exploring Devon and Somerset, and Lyme Regis on the heritage coast of Dorset is just a short drive away. Lynton and Lynmouth on the North Devon coast, Exmoor National Park, the historic towns of Somerset, and the seaside resorts of South Devon are all easily accessible from the self catering Somerset holiday cottages at Whipcott Water.

The Grand Western Canal was built in 1814, mainly for the use of the lime trade, and closed in 1869. The 11 mile stretch that remains today runs from Tiverton in Devon to Holcombe Rogus, and is a Country Park and Local Nature Reserve, with free access all year round.
In a pretty rural setting one mile from the village of Holcombe Rogus, with a tranquil canalside location, Whipcott Water Cottages provide luxurious, modern self catering accommodation right next to the towpath of the Grand Western Canal on the borders of Somerset and Devon. This part of the West Country is an ideal holiday destination, being close to Exmoor National Park, the rugged coastline of North Devon, and the traditional seaside towns and sandy beaches of the south Devon coast. The towns of Wellington, Taunton, Tiverton and Exeter are all within easy reach, and there are many quaint little villages and old country pubs where you can enjoy delicious West Country food. Whether you are looking for an action filled holiday or a relaxing break in beautiful surroundings, the self-catering cottage accommodation at Whipcott Water on the Devon/Somerset border will provide a perfect base for exploring the area.

From Tiverton you can enjoy a trip on a horse-drawn barge and experience the peace and tranquillity of the canal, perhaps catching a glimpse of kingfishers, dragonflies, or maybe an otter. The self catering Devon/Somerset cottages at Whipcott Water are situated next to the canal, which is ideal for walking, cycling, fishing and boating.

There will be private moorings available for visitors to Whipcott Water Cottages from 2007, with small boats for hire.

There are six cottages built on the site of an old lime kiln, two of which have facilities for disabled guests, and a smaller cottage adjoining the owners’ home, which is about 300yds from the canal. Each cottage provides extremely comfortable, well-equipped self catering holiday accommodation of a very high standard, with all of the cottages having their own private hot tub!

One of our recently built cottages is architect designed to the maximum disabled standards. This provides accommodation which conforms to the guidelines set by the National Accessibility Scheme, including a fully disabled bathroom/wet room, and a twin bedroom with electrically controlled beds.

The cottages have direct access to the canal where you can walk or cycle along the level towpath, or find a quiet spot to fish or enjoy a picnic. There is a pub and a shop at Holcombe Rogus, and a good restaurant within 1½ miles, or you can walk along the towpath to the canalside pub at Sampford Peverill which is 4 miles away.

Whipcott Water Cottages on the Somerset and Devon borders are available all year round, providing superb self catering cottage accommodation in this part of the West Country. With a wealth of things to see and do, visitors will find this part of Devon and Somerset a delight to explore at any time of year. We can provide welcome packs in the holiday cottages by arrangement, and if you have a special occasion to celebrate, such as a birthday or anniversary, we will make up a welcome hamper to make your holiday begin with style. Just tell us what you would like us to include in your welcome pack, and it will be ready in your cottage for your arrival. Come and stay in one of our comfortable self catering Somerset cottages and we will do our best to make sure you have an enjoyable holiday in this very special part of the West Country.
